Belgian Brussels Duchesse Bobbin Lace Applique', 'This lace has handmade bobbin motifs with ornamental fillings of needle "pops" on small scale machine netting and then applied to larger scale machine netting. The trellis works in the open spaces are often needlemade (see photos in gallery of this lace). This is a traditional use of machine netting as it was readily available in the 1850's. Machine versions were invented 100 years earlier! Duchess is one of the "part" laces, made of many individual motifs to be assembled by joins or netting into the final product. The design is drafted onto a master paper, copied, cut and distributed to many lacemakers who work simultaneously. Another crew applies the finished pieces to the net.
